Palakkad, once known as Palghat, is the fourth largest city in the Indian state of Kerala and is situated on the banks of the Bharathappuzha river. Palakkad is famous for the ancient Palakkad Fort, which is also known as the Tipu Sultan fort. Palakkad was once ruled by the Palakkad Rajas, the Zamorin of Calicut, Hyder Ali and the British before becoming part of the Indian union in 1947. Palakkad is also famous for its snacks that are specially cooked in coconut oil, a specialty of the Kerala Cuisine.
