Meerut is an ancient city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It has been referenced in the Indian epic Ramayana and was once known as 'Maydant Ka Kheda'. Meerut was the hometown of Mandodari, the wife of Ravana. Meerut also contains the ruins of Hastinapur, the capital of the Kauravas and is also famous for the sepoy mutiny of 1857, often times referred to as 'India's First War of Independence.' Ruled by Muhammed Ghazni, Muhammed Gor, the Mughals, Marathas and the British, Meerut has had a rich cultural heritage and the character of the city and its cuisine has been influenced by this.
