The name Mumbai is derived from 'Mumba' or 'Maha-Amba', as Mumbadevi, the patron deity of the native Koli community is referred to. Mumbai is the second most populated city and is the financial capital of India. Mumbai actually is a group of seven islands that were once under the Portuguese and the British; these islands - Bombay, Parel, Mazagaon, Mahim, Colaba, Worli, and Old Woman's Island were connected in 1845 by reclaiming land between them from the sea. Mumbai is the melting pot of different cultures and therefore the customs and food in Mumbai has been influenced a lot by this.
