Madugula Halwa is also called the First Night special sweet Halwa. Madugula, which is a non-descript village 70 km from Vizag, has become a household name for over a century in the three districts of north Andhra and many other parts of the state, all due to its sweet dish famously called Madugula Halwa. Madugula Halwa is a must for everyone. This sweet is very famous for Marriage functions, especially during the First-night function. It is a must-have sweet due to its healthy nature. This sweet is liked by children and adults alike. By eating this sweet one can get all the health benefits sourced from natural ingredients which are used to make this sweet.
The Madugula halwa was first made by a sweet seller, Dangeti Dharma Rao, in 1890. Currently, the fourth generation of his family is continuing to make sweets. Over 100 years ago, Dharma Rao was experimenting with various sweet recipes that can be stocked up for a month. In doing that, he found the idea of halwa, which later on down the lane became famous as Madugula halwa. This sweet is very famous for its First-night function. The halwa is considered to be a must-have sweet due to its healthy nature. This sweet is especially liked by both children and adults.
It has a unique recipe consisting of wheat milk, forest honey, dry fruits, sugar, and loads of ghee. The sweet takes around five days to get fully prepared. It can last for a month without becoming stale. Wheat is to be soaked for three days and then it needs to be ground to make it into wheat milk. The wheat milk is then boiled in sugar syrup with cashew, pistachio, almonds, and forest Araku honey. Later, loads of ghee are added to it. The preparation of this Madugula halwa is completely Homemade. It is done with skilful hands using firewood, which will take more time to prepare and give the best flavour and taste.
The fourth generation of the Dangeti family is continuing the tradition of making Madugula halwa. Many sweet shops in Vizag have also started making this halwa. Some have also tried their hands in cashing on the Madugula halwa by selling it online. Many online stores offer to sell the Madugula halwa. But none of these have sourced it from the original makers.
As of now, the Dangeti family is taking orders over the phone. But the family also has plans to expand the market by doing some branding around it with new kinds of packaging and so on. They have spoken about planning to apply for a trademark and patent to check duplicates. The makers want to continue their great-grandfather's legacy of spreading some sweet things to the public. Mohan Rao of Dangeti's fourth generation is currently taking care of the sweet-making business in Madugula.
The halwa is famous not only for its makers but also for the process of making it. But the tradition of eating it on the first day of marriage has made it way more famous. It is considered for its healthy nature and benefits. This sweet has also made the name of its village famous around the world.
